Peripheral Artery Disease in India
About Peripheral Artery Disease
When arteries, blood vessels carrying oxygen are blocked, it could lead to a peripheral artery disease. This is commonly called as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Typically, plaque builds up in the walls of major blood vessels, narrowing them leading to atherosclerosis. This affects blood and oxygen supply to the organs of the body – primarily the legs in most cases. Structural defects in blood vessels can also be a cause for peripheral vascular disease, and can occur in any artery of the body.
Symptoms Requiring Leg Artery Angioplasty
Pain in various forms is the first symptom of peripheral vascular/artery disease that may require a Leg angioplasty or peripheral angioplasty. The various types of pain are ache, or cramps in the legs when walking or exercising; ache or pain in the calf, foot or buttocks and thighs. This could disappear when taking rest and reappear when there is activity. Other serious symptoms that require fast action are non-healing ulcers, leg weakness, numbness, coldness, tingling and change in color of the foot skin. A Leg artery angioplasty is a proven treatment method. Dr. Jathin Krishna Rai, our principal consultant is an expert in peripheral angioplasty in Mumbai.
Risk Factors of Peripheral Vascular Diseases
Diabetes
Hypertension
Tobacco Usage
High Cholesterol level
Obesity
Besides these factors, family history, old age, and a sedentary lifestyle that is becoming common in fast paced mega polis’ like Mumbai, Bangalore, and so on are also major causes of a Peripheral artery disease.
Peripheral Vascular Disease Treatment Methods
Doctors can identify circulatory disorders and peripheral artery diseases easily by way of physical examination, patient symptoms, and tests. Depending on the case, these tests may be simple Color Doppler to specialized tests conducted to decide course of action and management of the disease. Surgical solutions are a thing of the past, and non-invasive treatments are gaining popularity. Peripheral angioplasty and stenting are two such non-surgical treatment methods. Another treatment method is Atheroctomy which is also successful in specific situations.
Peripheral Artery
1. Peripheral/Leg Angioplasty and Stenting
Angioplasty inflates a tiny balloon in the narrowed segment of the artery, compressing the plaque against the blood vessel. When the plaque is resilient to dilatation/compression and recoils back, aStent (fine wire mesh tube) is inserted and then gently expanded to open the vessel and restore blood supply. Over a period of time, lining of artery will slowly grow over the stent, permanently incorporating it into the artery wall.
2. Atherectomy
This latest technique is used to shave off the obstructing plaque with the help of a device. The main advantage is that stent placement is not required. So, this is very effective to treat peripheral artery disease where leg artery angioplasty/stenting may not be successful, such as in segments of vessels across joints.
Apart from these, other vascular treatments are also conducted as day care procedures.
